Engine 8 Re-opened After 11 Years

Mayor Daniel Rivera, with Fire Chief Brian Moriarty, announce the re-opening of the Engine 8 fire station on Tower Hill after eleven years. Mayor Rivera and Chief Moriarty, along with members of the Lawrence Fire Department, held a virtual grand reopening of Engine 8 earlier today. “I have said since day one: residents need to feel safe in their homes, it is imperative to their quality of life. Today, we re-open Engine 8 and bring back that long overdue and much needed sense of safety not only to Tower Hill residents, but to the entire City,” said Mayor Rivera. “I applaud Chief Moriarty, who has been a driving force of accomplishing more with less in the Lawrence Fire Department by modernizing the fleet of trucks and engines and fighting fires smarter while going after every dollar to support his men and women in the Department.” The opening of Engine 8 makes this the first time in eleven years that all six firehouses in the city are open and operating at full capacity.

The process to re-open Engine 8 was two years in the making and the repairs and improvements to the building, totaling $200K with zero increases to the Fire Department budget, include a new roof, a new floor, updated kitchen and plumbing and heating systems. “I want to thank the Department of Public Works for their efforts in rehabbing Engine 8. Re-opening this neighborhood firehouse will increase public safety by reducing response times to incidents throughout Tower Hill while also transforming a dilapidated eyesore back to a fully-manned firehouse once more and doing it all within the current budget” said Mayor Dan Rivera. Engine 8 apparatus boasts a half a million-dollar pump truck that the City of Lawrence purchased in 2015 through Capital Improvement funding.
