In order to obtain a business certificate each applicant must complete the “Business Certificate” form and obtain verification that real estate taxes and assessments, water use, and inspectional service citations and fees are paid and up-to-date for the location of your business and/or for the applicant. All documents must be completed “in person” by an individual authorized by the business or company. The tasks necessary cannot be completed by mail or by City personnel or staff. Forms and applications are available upon request from the Office of the City Clerk or from the City of Lawrence Website [].

Please provide the information as requested on the form. Necessary signatures may be affirmed in the City Clerk’s Office or may be notarized at the time the documents is signed before a notary or justice of the peace.

Corporate owners MUST obtain the signature of at least one corporate officer [ie: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Clerk] and sign in their corporate capacity before a notary or the City Clerk Staff. In addition, corporate owners MUST file a “copy” of a “Certificate of Good Corporate Standing” issued by the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts dated within one year from the date of submission regardless of the location of the Corporate Offices. Also, corporate filers must provide the location of the corporate headquarters in addition to the Lawrence business location for each business sight. Please note that filing a business certificate with the City of Lawrence will not result in the exclusive reservation of your business name or trade name. Additional filings with other State and/or Federal Agencies may be required in order to secure exclusive use of a business name or trade name. Please consult with your legal representative or directly with any such agency to determine the requirements for securing a business or trade name.

Once all steps are complete and payment is received, the Office of the City Clerk will record your business and issue a certified copy of the “Business Certificate”. The certificate is valid for four years from date of registration and recording by the Office of the City Clerk.

In order to withdraw a previously issued business certificate, complete the form indicating that it is for the purpose of “withdrawal” of the business and file the form with the Office of the City Clerk along with a 20.00 fee to withdraw the business. A certified copy of the withdrawal will be issued for your use upon filing and recording.
